Brand fit

Brand fit assessment for influencers: a six-dimension test before you shortlist

Buyer fit asks whether the audience can buy from you. Brand fit asks whether the creator is someone your brand would stand next to. Here is a six-dimension test, a fit brief and a call script to answer it.

In short

  • Brand fit is about the creator, not the audience: category credibility, voice, values, lifestyle and price point, believability and creative range. Audience fit is a separate check.
  • Write a one-page fit brief from your own channel first: five must-haves, five deal-breakers and three nice-to-haves. Score creators against it, not against a feeling.
  • Run the logo-swap test on 12 recent organic posts. If your brand's name on the post would look wrong, the creator is wrong, however well their numbers score.
  • A 30-minute call with six fixed questions shows selectiveness and creative range, which no profile can.

To assess an influencer's brand fit, write a one-page fit brief from your own channel, score each creator on six dimensions using 12 recent organic posts, run the logo-swap test and hold a short call with fixed questions. Brand fit is about the creator: whether they are believable saying what you need said, in the voice and company your brand keeps. Audience fit, covered in how to read influencer audience insights, is whether their followers can buy.

Our influencer vetting checklist touches brand fit in three checks: C2 (language), C3 (organic content already touches your category) and E3 (comment tone and past controversies). This post goes one level deeper and turns them into a test you can score. It is different from how to evaluate influencer content quality, which judges drafts after booking, and from brand safety guidelines for influencers, which sets rules after booking. This one decides who gets booked. It sits under our complete guide to influencer marketing in India.

Two fit questions, two kinds of failure

Buyer fitBrand fit
The questionCan this audience buy from us?Would this creator be believed, and would we stand next to them?
EvidenceInsights screensContent, comments and a conversation
A failure looks likeA great creator whose followers live elsewhereA great audience watching content that does not sound like your brand
Cost of ignoring itFees paid for views nobody can useTrust spent on a recommendation viewers do not believe

In a 2025 study reported by Campaign India, 70% of brands cited trust and credibility as the reason to use influencers. Brand fit is where that trust is made or lost.

Step 1: write the fit brief from your own channel

Start from yourselves. Open your brand's last 20 organic posts and ad creatives, and ask three people who do not work on the brand to describe it in five words each. Then write one page.

SectionWhat goes in itSize
Must-have traitsThings a creator must show, such as hands-on product knowledge or a calm explaining voice5
Deal-breakersStances, categories, humour or language you will not stand next to5
Nice-to-havesUseful but negotiable, such as a second language3
Tone settingsWhere you sit between playful and serious, expert and peer, value and premium3 sliders

Write the deal-breakers before you look at a single profile, so they do not bend to a creator you already like. Our campaign brief template shows where the fit brief sits in the full brief.

Step 2: score six dimensions

Read the creator's last 12 organic posts, scroll back a year in their feed and open their Story highlights. Score each dimension from 0 to 3, where 3 is clearly yes and 0 is clearly no.

#DimensionThe questionEvidence
1Category credibilityDo they already talk about this category with knowledge? The last 15 posts and the replies they write
2VoiceDo they sound like the way your brand speaks, in the same language mix?Captions, spoken Reels, comment replies
3Values and stancesDo their public stances sit comfortably beside your brand?A year of posts, highlights, the topics they joke about
4Lifestyle and price pointDoes the life they show suit the product's price position? What they use and buy on camera, not assumptions
5BelievabilityWould a follower believe they use this?Say the main claim aloud in their voice
6Creative rangeCan they make the format you need, and have they done it well?Past demos, reviews, stories, skits

Judge only public content that bears on the brand. A creator's private life is not part of the test. Total the scores out of 18. Our working scale, not a published one: 15 to 18 is a strong fit, 11 to 14 is conditional on a clear brief and a call, and 10 or below is a pass for this brief. Write one line beside every score, as in the vetting sheet.

Step 3: three tests that catch what scores miss

The logo-swap test. Take the 12 organic posts and imagine each one on your brand's account. Mark it yes, maybe or no. A creator with several no marks may still be good, just not for you.

The neighbour test. Look at the last five brands they promoted. Would you be comfortable as the sixth? Our guide to auditing influencer past brand deals shows how to build that list properly.

The screenshot test. Picture one of the 12 posts screenshotted beside your ad in a group chat at your own head office. If your marketing head would wince, so would viewers.

What to ask the creator to send first

A profile shows what a creator posted. A short request shows how they think. Before the call, ask for four things, in writing, from every creator on the list:

  • Three of their own posts they are proudest of, with one line each on why.
  • One topic or brand category they will not promote, and the reason.
  • One past collaboration they would do differently, and what they would change.
  • Two lines on how they check a product's claims before they repeat them.

Read the answers for specifics. A creator who names a real post and a real regret has a view of their own work. A creator who sends their highest-view posts and a polite line about loving all brands has told you about their reach, not about their judgement. The same requests double as a check on whether the creator reads a brief carefully, which matters when the brief carries claims that ASCI expects an advertiser to substantiate. Our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer covers that duty.

Step 4: the 30-minute call

A call shows what a profile cannot. Send the product beforehand if you can, so the creator has something real to talk about, and ask the same six questions of everyone.

QuestionA good answer sounds likeA weak answer sounds like
Which brands have you said no to, and why?Specific reasons tied to their audience"I only take what fits", with no example
What did you notice when you used our product?A detail you did not put in the briefYour brief repeated back
How would you show it in your own feed?A concrete scene in their own styleA generic unboxing
Which of your posts are you proudest of, and why?A reason about craft or audience responseA reason about reach alone
What would your audience push back on here?A real objection, said calmly"Nothing, they love me"
What do you need from us to make this good?Time, a clear claim, access to the product"Just send the fee"

Red flags

  • An instant yes, with no question about the product.
  • Claims on the call that match your brief word for word.
  • Content that copies another creator's format shot for shot.
  • Old posts with a stance or a joke your brand would not stand next to, found in the one-year scroll.
  • A fit argument that rests only on follower count.
  • A different voice on sponsored posts than on organic ones, which the consistency check measures.
  • Reluctance to be asked for a reference from a previous brand; see influencer reference checks.

A worked example

How brand fit maps to the Gully Score

The Gully Score has no separate brand-fit line. The fit questions sit inside two of its criteria: buyer fit, 20 points, where our sheet's C2 and C3 carry 4 points each, and brand safety, 10 points, where E3 carries 3. Creative range also feeds content craft, 15 points. Those sub-point splits are our suggested split for a manual sheet, and the criterion totals are the Gully Score's own.

That is why the six-dimension test is useful as a second pass. A sensible way to use it: score every creator on the Gully Score first, then use the fit score to choose between creators who all clear 70. Put the result in a column of your shortlist sheet; our influencer shortlist template has room for it.

Fit matters most when the deal is long, because the creator will speak for you over months. For ambassador deals, read our creator ambassador programmes page, and if you tell us what your brand will and will not stand next to when you send us a brief, the shortlist in the plan reflects it. The plan returns within 48 hours of the brief call.

Frequently asked questions

What is brand fit in influencer marketing?

Brand fit is how well a creator's voice, values, content and lifestyle suit your brand, so that a follower would believe the creator uses and recommends your product. It is separate from audience fit, which asks whether the creator's followers match your buyers. A creator can pass one and fail the other.

How is brand fit different from buyer fit?

Buyer fit is about the audience: age, gender, city and language against your buyer. Brand fit is about the creator: category credibility, voice, stances and believability. A great audience with the wrong voice produces content that viewers do not trust. A perfect voice with the wrong audience produces trust nobody can use.

How do I assess whether an influencer fits my brand?

Write a fit brief from your own channel, read 12 recent organic posts, score six dimensions from 0 to 3, run the logo-swap test and hold a short call with fixed questions, the same for every creator. Our vetting checklist covers the audience side.

Can a creator outside my category still fit?

Yes, if viewers would believe it. A comedy creator can fit a snack brand if the product belongs in their world and their voice suits the brief. Run the believability test: say the claim aloud in their voice. If it sounds wrong, change the creator or the claim.

What are brand fit deal-breakers?

They are the things your brand will not stand next to: a stance, a category, a style of humour or a competitor. Write them before you search, so they do not depend on the mood of the day. Our brand safety guidelines post shows how to turn them into rules creators can sign.

Should I interview every creator on the shortlist?

For a small shortlist or a long deal, yes; for 50 micro creators, interview a sample and score the rest from content. A short call is worth the time when the deal is long, when claims are involved or when the creator will speak for the brand over months.

What if my team disagrees about fit?

Agree the fit brief before scoring, have two people score independently and compare. Disagreements usually reveal an unwritten rule, such as a tone, a topic or a style of humour, which you can then add to the brief so the next shortlist needs less debate.
