Education advertising rules for influencers: placement, rank and recognition claims

Colleges, edtechs and coaching centres can use creators, but every number a creator says about placements, ranks or recognition must be current, substantiated and shown the way the rules require.

In short

  • ASCI's education guidelines (9 Mar 2023) bar guarantees of rank or jobs without substantiation, 100% claims on abstract outcomes, and placement or ranking figures from anything but the latest completed academic year.
  • Topper and alumni testimonials must come from students who completed the programme at the advertising institute. In coaching, the CCPA also requires written consent taken after selection.
  • Free course access is a material connection under ASCI, so a creator who receives it needs an ad label even without a fee.
  • Brief creators from an evidence pack with an academic-year stamp on every number, and cast real students or alumni, never stock faces.

An influencer can show a campus, explain a course and share a real student's experience for an educational brand. What a creator cannot do is state placement numbers, ranks, salaries, recognition or guarantees unless the institution can prove them, and the proof must be current. ASCI's education guidelines and the Central Consumer Protection Authority's rules for coaching both put the burden on the advertiser, which means the brand briefing the creator.

Our posts on coaching institutes and colleges and universities cover casting, calendars and the CCPA's coaching rules in depth. This post does one thing they do not: it reads the education claim rules line by line and shows how each lands on a creator script. It sits under our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer and our complete guide to influencer marketing in India, and brands should read it with our edtech and education page.

Which rulebook applies

Education advertising in India is not under one regulator. Three instruments reach a creator post, and a campaign can be inside more than one.

InstrumentApplies toForce
ASCI Guidelines for advertising of educational institutions, programmes and platforms, 9 March 2023Universities, colleges, schools, coaching classes, edtech platforms and similarSelf-regulatory code, enforced through complaints and ASCI's own monitoring
CCPA Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022Every advertisement in every medium, and manufacturers, service providers, agencies and endorsersNotified under section 18 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019; penalties under section 21
CCPA Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisement in Coaching Sector, 2024, 13 November 2024All advertisements by any person, including an endorser, engaged in coachingSame statutory route

"Coaching" in the 2024 guidelines means academic support, imparting education, guidance, instructions, study programmes or tuition, and excludes counselling, sports, dance, theatre and other creative activities. A test-prep edtech sits comfortably inside that. A degree college may not, and we have no decision on where the line falls, so treat ASCI's rules as the floor for every education brand and add the coaching rules where the product is exam preparation.

What ASCI's education guidelines require, and how that reads on a creator script

ASCI's guidelines list what an education advertisement shall not do. We have grouped them by the creator line they catch.

If the creator saysThe ASCI ruleWhat to do
"This is a UGC-approved degree" or "recognised, accredited, affiliated"An ad shall not lead the public to believe an institution or course is official, recognised, accredited, approved, registered, affiliated or endorsed unless the advertiser can substantiate itKeep the approval letter on file; say only what it says
A degree is advertisedThe ad shall name the authority that must recognise or approve itPut the authority's name on screen
"In partnership with a foreign university"If the programme is affiliated with an approved institution, the affiliating institution's full name and location must be stated, at least 50% of the font size of the advertised institution's name in visual media; in audio it must be statedShow the full name in the frame; say it in voice-over
"Guaranteed rank / job / admission"Barred unless substantiated; the ad must also carry "past record is no guarantee of future prospects" in a font no smaller than the claimCut the guarantee; add the line if any record is cited
"100% placement assistance"Numerical value of 100% is not allowed for abstract, non-quantifiable claimsSay what support exists, in plain words
"Our batch got an average of X LPA"Placement, compensation, enrolment, marks, rankings, faculty and infrastructure claims must be of the latest completed academic year and substantiatedStamp the academic year on every figure
"400 students placed"The ad must also state the total number of students in the class that passed outGive numerator and denominator
Topper testimonialMust be from students who completed the programme, exam or subject only with the advertising instituteVerify the enrolment record
Campus tourVisuals of infrastructure must be real and existing when the ad is releasedShoot the actual campus; no stock or renderings passed off as built
"Ranked No. 1 in the city"The ad must give the full name and date of the publication or medium that released the rankingShow the ranking body and date on screen

The ASCI awards and rankings guideline of 21 April 2022 adds more. The ad must name the organisation and the month and year of the award, which must be no more than 12 months old for an annual cycle, and the awarding body's written permission is expected. An award in one category or area cannot be stretched to another: a university ranked 25th nationally cannot claim a "Top 5" in a zone unless a zonal ranking exists. There must be no commercial relationship between advertiser and awarding body, and photos of an award event are not enough proof.

Emotional and pressure rules

ASCI's education guidelines also set limits on how students and parents are shown. An ad may not show school students giving up sleep or meals to study, and may not portray an average or poor scorer as a failure, demotivated or receiving less love. It must not create a false sense of urgency or fear of missing out that could raise anxiety among school students or parents. It must not suggest certain subjects belong to a gender. A creator's "I stayed up three nights to crack it" story, however true, is a problem if it is the ad's message to school students. The CCPA's coaching guidelines add a related rule: no false sense of urgency or scarcity, and no false popularity, to push an immediate purchase.

Topper, alumni and student creators

Education brands lean on people who have been through the product. That is where most claims trouble starts.

  • A topper creator. The CCPA's coaching guidelines require that a candidate's name, photograph, testimonial or video are not used without written consent, taken after the selection. An ad showing a rank must also disclose, with the candidate's photograph, the rank, the name and duration of the course and whether it was paid. ASCI separately requires the testimonial to come from a student who completed the programme at the advertising institute only.
  • An alumnus on salary. A line like "I joined at X LPA" is a compensation claim. It must be of the latest completed academic year and substantiated, and the figure should be checked against the offer letter or an equivalent record. The creator is also the beneficiary of the course, which is itself a connection the audience would not expect, so rule 14 of the CCPA's 2022 guidelines says to disclose it.
  • A student ambassador. Free tuition, a scholarship or a fee waiver is something of value. ASCI counts free products or services even when sent unsolicited, so the creator needs an Ad, Sponsored or Free gift label.
  • A student under 18. The CCPA's 2022 guidelines have a rule on ads that address, target or use children. See our post on children in influencer ads for what it bars.

Enforcement you can point to

The CCPA's coaching guidelines were issued on 13 November 2024. By 17 December 2024, according to the Press Information Bureau, the Authority had issued 45 notices to coaching centres for misleading advertisements and imposed penalties of ₹61,60,000 on 19 of them, with directions to discontinue the ads. The guidelines apply to an endorser as well as the centre.

We found no published CCPA action against a creator for an education post. ASCI's own category numbers for education are not in the press release we read, so we do not quote one. The point for a brand is narrower: the CCPA has used its penalty power on education advertisers, and a creator video is the same advertisement.

The evidence pack for an education brief

Give creators a one-page sheet drawn from a pack the brand can produce within a day.

Every figure a creator speaks should match a row. Our compliance checklist shows where the sheet fits in the approval flow, and brand liability for influencer posts explains why the sheet is also your file if a complaint arrives. If a creator ad will be boosted, check partnership-ad previews for the label and the disclaimer wording, as covered in creator ads and whitelisting.

What we could not source

We did not open UGC or AICTE rules on advertising, state coaching regulations, or the Ministry of Education's January 2024 guidelines on coaching centres. We have no source for whether an edtech selling non-exam courses is within the CCPA's coaching definition, or for ASCI complaint numbers for education alone. Foreign tie-up advertising may have further rules we did not review.

Frequently asked questions

What are the advertising rules for educational institutions in India?

ASCI's guidelines of 9 March 2023 cover institutions, programmes and platforms: no unsubstantiated claims of recognition, no guaranteed ranks or jobs, claims about placements, ranks and faculty limited to the latest completed academic year, and real infrastructure visuals. Coaching also falls under the CCPA's 2024 guidelines. Our ASCI guide explains how ASCI enforces.

Can an influencer promise placement or a guaranteed job for a course?

No. ASCI's guidelines bar advertisements that lead the public to believe enrolment will guarantee a rank, marks, a job, admission or a raise unless the advertiser can substantiate it, and require the line 'past record is no guarantee of future prospects' in a font no smaller than the claim. Numerical claims like '100% placement assistance' are barred for abstract outcomes.

Can a creator share their own salary or placement result in an ad?

Only if it is real, current and the brand can substantiate it. ASCI says claims about compensation, placements, rankings and similar figures must relate to the latest completed academic year and be backed by evidence. A creator's personal result is a testimonial about an outcome, so the brand needs the proof and must keep the caption true to it.

Do education ads need an influencer disclosure label?

Yes, whenever there is a material connection. ASCI counts money, free products or services even if unsolicited, trips, awards and family or employment ties. A free course seat or scholarship is something of value, so the creator needs a label such as Ad, Sponsored or Free gift. See our guide to disclosure labels.

Are the CCPA's coaching guidelines applicable to edtech influencer ads?

They apply to all ads by any person, including an endorser, engaged in the coaching sector, defined as academic support, imparting education, instruction, study programmes or tuition. A test-prep edtech sits close to that definition. Whether other courses fall within it is our reading to confirm with counsel. See our post on coaching institutes.

Can college ads use ranking claims in influencer videos?

Yes, if the ranking is credible and cited. ASCI's guideline on awards and rankings and its education guidelines expect the ranking body's full name and the date or month and year, a ranking no more than 12 months old, written consent from the ranking body, and no stretching a ranking to another category or region. Read our colleges and universities playbook for the formats.
