How to hire fashion influencers in India: cast the customer, brief the fit, count net sales

To hire fashion influencers, cast by body, price point and occasion: the creator your customer sees herself in beats the one with the most followers. Brief the size worn, set rules for gifted garments and count sales after returns.

In short

  • Cast the customer, not the follower count: match body type and size, the price point of the clothes the creator normally wears, and the occasion you sell.
  • Put fit facts in every post: size worn, height, the size you recommend and the size chart. Fit information cuts returns more than styling does.
  • Garments given to creators are benefits. Label them, record their value and expect section 194R to apply once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a financial year.
  • Judge fashion on net sales after returns, by creator. A code that drives many returns costs more than the fee shows.

To hire fashion influencers in India, start from your customer and work backwards: her size, her budget and the occasion she is dressing for. Cast creators who already look like her, brief them on fit as carefully as on style, set rules for gifted garments, and judge the campaign on sales after returns, not on gross orders.

Two pages sit behind this one: our fashion and apparel page on the category's fit and returns problem, and fashion campaign ideas on formats. Read this post when you are about to shortlist. It covers how to read a fashion feed, how to brief on fit and what to write into the garment terms. The buying side is our Instagram influencer marketing service, and the channel as a whole is in our guide to influencer marketing in India.

Read the feed like a buyer

Before you ask for a rate, scroll the last thirty posts and run six checks.

  1. Price point. What do the clothes cost? A creator who wears ₹15,000 outfits does not make a ₹999 kurta credible.
  2. Body and size. Does her frame match your buyer? Comments that ask "which size are you wearing?" show an audience that shops.
  3. Fit honesty. Does she say when a piece runs small or sheer? A creator who never does is reading a script.
  4. Styling. Does she style from her own wardrobe, mixing brands, or only wear tagged gifts?
  5. Colour and edits. Heavy filters change fabric colour, and a colour that differs on delivery can be a reason to return a garment.
  6. Audience. Check city, age and gender in the insights; see how to read influencer audience insights.

Red flags: feeds made entirely of hauls, an AI-generated "model" with no real person behind the account, sudden follower jumps, and the same adjective ("obsessed") under every post.

Rules that matter in fashion

Labels on gifted clothes. ASCI treats free products, even unsolicited, as a material connection, so a gifted garment needs a label such as Free gift or Collaboration, upfront and prominent, and superimposed on the visual for Stories (ASCI). Brand and creator share responsibility. ASCI's FY2025-26 report puts fashion and lifestyle at 4.3% of influencer violations (ASCI).

AI in fashion content. ASCI's guidelines on synthetically generated content, signed on 17 September 2026, require a label where AI content materially influences consumer decisions. Its examples include synthetic influencers and replicating a real person's likeness or voice, even with consent. They take effect three months after signing, which is about mid-December 2026 by our arithmetic. If you plan AI try-ons or AI models, read AI-generated content rules. Never use AI to reshape a creator's body or a garment's drape: it misstates fit, which is the one thing the buyer cannot check.

Fabric and origin words. Keep fabric, origin and sustainability claims to what the care label and your test reports support. A creator who says "pure silk" about a blend creates your problem. This is general information, not legal advice.

The fit sheet: how to brief

A fashion brief is mostly facts about the garment and the wearer:

  • The piece, price, sizes in stock and size-chart link.
  • The size worn and the creator's height, stated in the caption or on screen ("wearing M, I am 5'4").
  • Who the piece is for: body types, occasions, climate.
  • Fabric and care, as printed on the label.
  • Required shots: full length, movement, fabric close-up, and one frame in natural light with no filter, so colour is honest.
  • One piece styled two ways, which proves versatility.
  • What to avoid: slimming promises, named rival labels and heavy filters.
  • Offer, code and return policy, said in one line.

Invite honest fit comments such as "runs slightly short in the sleeve". They reduce returns and make the endorsement believable.

Which format sells which garment

GarmentBest formatWhy
Sarees, dresses, anything with movementReelDrape and swing do not show in a still
Workwear and basicsCarousel with outfit formulasViewers save outfits to copy
Anything with a fit riskStory set with a link and size answersQuestions arrive in the replies and can be answered live

A static carousel also carries the size chart as a frame, which a Reel cannot. Briefing creators to pair a Reel with a carousel gives the buyer both the movement and the measurements, and the bundle is cheaper than two separate bookings.

Garments: gift, loan or return

RouteTermsTax note
Kept giftCreator picks a size from your chart; ship the correct size; label requiredBenefit valued at fair market value; section 194R at 10% applies once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a financial year, and you collect a declaration

Ask for measurements before shipping, and for size-inclusive casting send the actual size, not the nearest one. See our product seeding logistics guide and TDS and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not tax advice.

Contracts and rights

  • Lookbook rights. Reposting on your handle and site is one right, running the Reel as an ad another. Price ad rights at about 35% on top for 60 days, per the multipliers behind our rates guide, and read usage rights for influencer content.
  • Exclusivity. Narrow it to the same category inside the drop window, for example no rival festive ethnic wear for 30 days, at about 40% on top.
  • Model release. If you photograph the creator yourself for ads, get a separate release for the shoot.
  • Payment. Tie instalments to approvals; see influencer payment terms.

What it costs

These are the per-creator asking prices our influencer rates guide uses:

TierReelStory setStatic or carousel
Nano₹2,000 to ₹10,000₹1,000 to ₹5,000₹1,000 to ₹8,000
Micro₹8,000 to ₹80,000₹5,000 to ₹20,000₹5,000 to ₹50,000
Mid-tier₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh₹20,000 to ₹80,000₹30,000 to ₹2 lakh

There is no published fashion multiplier, and one booking platform reports lifestyle as commoditised, so price from average views and compare quotes. A bundle of Reel, post and Stories is priced at about 1.6x to 2x a single Reel in one rate guide, and the same booking platform reports a 20% to 35% discount for bundling against buying items separately. Garments, ad rights at about 35% and GST at 18% come on top, and an agency's fee, where used, is published at 15% to 25% of creator spend. Try your own mix in the cost calculator.

Count net sales, not gross orders

Fashion is the category where a code can look excellent and lose money. For each creator, record gross orders (codes, see how to track sales with discount codes), returns and reasons, and net revenue: gross orders times order value times one minus the return rate. Cost per net order is fee plus garments plus shipping, divided by net orders. A creator with strong gross orders and a high return rate is a fit problem to fix in the next brief, not a creator to scale.

Where fashion plans leak money

  • One body for every size. A single creator cannot prove fit for a range that runs to 5XL.
  • Shipping the wrong size. Creators will not wear what does not fit, and will say so.
  • Judging on gross orders. Returns can erase the margin.
  • Briefing by mood board. Fit facts do the selling.

Fashion and beauty creators overlap a lot, so read how to hire beauty influencers before casting a styling creator for both. For resort and holiday wear, travel creators show clothes in context. Our gifting and seeding service runs the garment logistics. To get a creator shortlist, a fit sheet and a cost estimate within 48 hours of a brief call, send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions

How much do fashion influencers charge in India?

Published asking prices run about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per Reel for a nano creator, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro creator and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-tier creator. We found no published fashion multiplier, so treat it as the baseline niche and price on average views. See our Instagram influencer rates guide.

How do I choose fashion influencers for a clothing brand?

Scroll the last thirty posts and check three things: the price of the clothes the creator normally wears, whether the body and size range match your buyer, and whether they say when a piece runs small. Then check audience city and age in their insights. Our guide to finding micro-influencers in India shows where to start.

Should I send free clothes or pay fashion influencers?

Gift to nano creators to test appeal, and pay micro and mid-tier creators for fixed deliverables and dates. Kept garments are benefits, so section 194R can apply once they pass ₹20,000 per person in a year. Loaned pieces that come back do not count. See TDS and GST on influencer payments.

How do I reduce returns from influencer fashion campaigns?

Make fit information part of every post: size worn, height and your size chart link. Cast creators across the size range you sell, ask for an unedited colour frame, and track return rate by creator and size. Our fashion industry page explains the fit and returns problem in more detail.

Do fashion influencers have to disclose gifted clothes?

Yes. ASCI treats free products, even unsolicited ones, as a material connection, so the post needs a label such as Free gift or Collaboration, upfront and on screen for Stories. The brand shares responsibility for the post conforming. Read our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.

Can I use AI models or AI try-on in influencer fashion campaigns?

You can, with labels. ASCI's guidelines on synthetically generated content, signed on 17 September 2026, require a label where AI content materially influences consumer decisions, including synthetic influencers and replicated likenesses. They take effect about three months later. Read our post on AI-generated content rules.
