In short

  • Check eligibility and compliance before reading any numbers. Only a post with cleared music, a visible label and provable claims is worth ranking.
  • Use four ratios: saves and shares per 1,000 viewers, hold ratio, non-follower share of engagement, and buying questions in comments. Compare across the wave, not across platforms.
  • Ranking by summed ranks gives a shortlist, not a verdict. Put the top three or four into a paid test and keep one in reserve.
  • Ask creators for insights screenshots by day 7. Tagged partners get only a 14-day window on Stories insights.

To pick influencer posts to boost, run each candidate through five gates in order: can it run as an ad, is it compliant, did it show early signal, does its audience match yours, and is there any risk in the comments or the creator's recent history. Only posts that pass all five get ranked, and only the top three or four go into a paid test.

Our creator ads and whitelisting page lists the signals we look for, and how to evaluate influencer content quality scores drafts and live posts for rebooking. This post is narrower: the selection procedure when you hold a wave of posts and budget for only a few. It feeds the test in partnership ads creative testing, and the permissions come from Instagram partnership ads setup. For the wider programme, see our guide to influencer marketing in India. Menu names change, so confirm each metric's label in the app.

Gate 1: eligibility, checked before any number

Check this before you read a single number. It costs nothing and removes a surprising share of the wave.

CheckMeta's published ruleIf it fails
FormatFeed image, video or carousel; Stories of 60 seconds or less; Reels of 15 minutes or lessSkip, or brief a re-cut
MusicReels with copyrighted music are unsupported unless the advertiser holds the rights; so is music from the Instagram libraryOriginal audio or royalty-free, else skip
Link stickerStories with link stickers are unsupportedRebuild the Story as an ad with a call-to-action link
EffectsFace or camera effects and product tags are unsupported in ReelsSkip, or brief a re-cut
AgeReels published before 15 October 2021 are not eligibleSkip
PermissionAn ad code, a tag with boost allowed, or account-level permissionChase it before ranking

Those rules come from Meta's eligible formats page. A post that fails gate 1 is not bad content. It belongs in the organic or re-cut route, which influencer content in Meta ads explains.

Gate 2: compliance

CheckPass conditionIf it fails
DisclosureLabel visible on screen and upfront, for ASCI's durations: at least three seconds in a video of 15 seconds or less, one third of the length in a video under two minutesDo not boost; ask for a re-cut with the label
ClaimsEvery claim in the video and caption is on your substantiated claims sheetRemove the claim or skip the post
Category rulesNot a category Meta bars from branded content, such as tobacco, weapons, payday loans or multilevel marketing, and any restrictions or pre-authorisation metSkip
QualificationsHealth or finance advice states the creator's qualifications as ASCI requiresSkip until fixed

Meta's Branded Content Policies also list restricted categories, including financial and insurance products and cosmetic procedures, that can be promoted only with restrictions on who sees the post, and some business types that need written pre-authorisation. Fintech and health brands should read that page before shortlisting. Our ASCI explainer covers the disclosure rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Gate 3: early signal

Ask creators for insights screenshots at day 3 and day 7. That timing is our practice. Meta says partners tagged in branded content can view insights in Business Suite, including reach and engagement for feed posts and a 14-day window for Stories, but what you see can differ from the creator's own screen, so ask for the Reel insights screen as well.

Four ratios make a post comparable with its wave.

RatioHow to calculate itWhere the data comes fromReading it
Saves and shares per 1,000 viewers(saves + shares) ÷ viewers × 1,000Creator's insights: interactions and viewersIntent. Meta counts saves and shares inside interactions, and says viewers is estimated and in development
Hold ratioAverage watch time ÷ video lengthReel insights: average watch time is watch time divided by initial viewsWhether people stay. Compare only videos of similar length
Non-follower shareNon-followers ÷ accounts engagedPost insights: Meta shows accounts engaged split into followers and non-followers for posts, Stories and LiveWhether strangers respond, and strangers are who the ad will reach
Buying questionsShare of the last 50 comments asking price, size, stock or where to buyA hand-coded sampleIntent in the viewer's own words

Meta's Reel insights page defines views as the number of times a reel starts or replays, and viewers as unique accounts that saw it on screen. Its insights overview defines interactions as likes, comments, saves and shares. The follower split is listed for posts, Stories and Live, so if your candidates are Reels, check whether the creator's app shows the split for them and use that ratio only when it does.

Two cautions. Meta marks several of these metrics as estimated, so compare posts inside one wave and not against outside benchmarks; we found no published India benchmark for any of these ratios. And a ratio built on a handful of saves swings wildly, so give small posts less weight.

Gate 4: audience fit

Instagram shows demographics (top countries, cities, age ranges and gender) only when a post reaches or engages more than 100 accounts, and a longer date range may be needed. Compare them with the audience you will pay to reach.

  • Location. Do the top cities include places you deliver to?
  • Language. Are the comments in the language your ad copy will use?
  • Age. Does the top range overlap your buyers?
  • Reason for engaging. Did people ask about the product, or only react to the joke?

A post that is strong everywhere except fit belongs in a different campaign, such as awareness in another market.

Gate 5: risk

  • Comment tone. Meta says you cannot manage or delete likes and comments on a boosted post until the partnership ad is live, so read the thread first. Complaints about delivery or quality will follow the ad.
  • Creator context. A controversy in the last few weeks puts your ad beside it.
  • Rights window. It must outlast the test and the scaling that follows. Check the date.
  • Stale claims. Has the price, pack or formula changed since the post?
  • Age of post. Meta's suggested posts surface approved branded content from the last 60 days. Older posts carry older offers.

Rank the survivors

A routine for the wave

WhenWhat happensWho
Day 0Post goes live; gate 1 and gate 2 checked from the live postStrategist
Day 3First screenshots arrive; ratios drafted; obvious losers droppedStrategist
Day 7Second screenshots; comments coded; gates 4 and 5 run; ranking madeStrategist and brand manager
Day 8Shortlist agreed, permissions and codes collected, test cells builtMedia buyer
Day 9 onwardTest runs for the period Meta recommendsMedia buyer

Coding comments is the slowest step, so keep the rule simple: count a comment as a buying question if it asks about price, size, shade, stock, delivery or where to buy, and ignore tags of friends and emoji. Two people coding the same 50 comments should land within a few points of each other; if they do not, tighten the rule.

Where the method misleads

  • Equal weights. A rank sum treats the four ratios alike. If purchases are the goal, give intent more weight.
  • Organic is not paid. Meta publishes no link between organic saves and ad results. Treat the ranking as a hypothesis and let the paid test decide; our content repurposing ROI post shows how to keep a log that tests it.
  • Giveaway posts. Comments for entries inflate engagement without product interest. Leave them out; see Instagram influencer giveaways.
  • Viral entertainment. A post that travelled on the joke may reach the wrong buyers.

What happens to the posts you do not boost

They are not wasted. Posts that failed gate 1 can be re-cut. Posts that passed but ranked low stay as organic proof, and some earn a cheaper right, a brand repost on your own handles, which sits lower on the usage ladder. Record each post's ratios in the campaign log, because after two waves you can check whether the ratios that ranked well also won the paid test. That log is the only honest way to learn whether your shortlist method works.

How many to boost

Three or four, with one in reserve. Meta's learning phase page says an ad set usually needs about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, so every post you boost needs its own budget at that scale. The number you can fund caps your shortlist, and our creator ads budget split shows the sums. Buy ad rights only for the shortlisted posts, using an option clause priced in the original contract, as our usage rights guide explains.

Put it in the contract

Write these into the brief so the data arrives without chasing: insights screenshots at day 3 and day 7, delivered before Stories expire; the Reel insights screen and the post insights screen; a clean file for re-cuts; the date the ad-permission window ends. If you want the selection, permissions and test run for you, send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions

How many influencer posts should I boost?

Three or four per wave is usual for a test, with one in reserve. Meta says an ad set usually needs about 50 results in a week to leave the learning phase, so every post you boost needs its own budget at that scale. Pick the number you can fund, not the number that looks good. See our creator ads budget split.

When should I decide which post to boost?

Our practice is an early read at day 3 and a decision at day 7, once the post's reach has settled. Collect screenshots early, because Meta gives tagged partners only a 14-day window on Stories insights. Waiting for weeks risks permissions and offers going stale. Our partnership ads creative testing guide covers what happens next.

Which Instagram metrics predict a good ad?

Meta publishes no link between organic metrics and ad results, so treat every signal as a hypothesis. We use saves and shares per 1,000 viewers, hold, the share of non-follower engagement and buying questions in comments to build a shortlist, then let a paid test decide. Our guide to measuring Reel performance explains the base ratios.

Can I boost a Reel that uses music from Instagram's library?

Not as a partnership ad. Meta lists copyrighted music and tracks from the Instagram music library as unsupported unless the advertiser holds the rights, while original audio and royalty-free music from the Sound Collection are supported. This gate removes many trending Reels, so check it first. See our partnership ads setup guide.

Can I see a creator's post insights as the brand?

Partly. Meta says partners tagged in branded content can view insights for it, with reach and engagement for feed posts and a 14-day window for Stories, in Meta Business Suite. What you see for Reels can differ from the creator's own screen, so write screenshot delivery into the contract. See our paid partnership label guide.

What if the best organic post fails the eligibility gate?

Use it as proof of the idea and brief a re-cut. If the creator re-cuts it with cleared audio and no link sticker, and you hold account-level permission, you can upload the new media as a partnership ad. Agree that in the contract, because a re-cut is new work. See influencer content in Meta ads.
