In short
- Write one goal and one tracked action first. Reels reach new people, Story sets with a code drive the action, and partnership ads back posts that already worked.
- Split the creator budget by format before casting, and decide ad rights before you sign. Rights add about 35%, so buy them only for posts you will boost.
- Approve twice, concept then draft, against a one-page checklist: label, claim, first three seconds, audio, link or code, and tags.
- Post in waves over two to three days, read at day 7 and day 30, and rank every creator on cost per result.
To run an Instagram influencer campaign, write one goal and one tracked action, split the creator budget by format, cast creators on audience data rather than follower counts, sign contracts that fix the disclosure label and ad rights, approve each post twice, publish in waves, put ad money behind the posts that perform and report cost per result at day 7 and day 30. Allow about five weeks for a micro-creator campaign. This is the how-to; our Instagram influencer marketing service page explains what each format is for.
The wider channel is covered in our complete guide to influencer marketing in India. If you are still deciding whether Instagram is the right place to start, read the best platform for influencer marketing in India first.
The five-week calendar
| Week | Work | Your decision | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (days 0 to 2) | Brief call, goal, budget, creator plan | Goal and budget | Shortlist with costs |
| 1 | Shortlist sign-off, contracts, product dispatch | Which creators, which rights | Signed contracts, parcels out |
| 2 | Concepts, then drafts | Approve or revise | Approved drafts |
| 3 | Posting waves, Story sets, comment monitoring | Nothing unless an error appears | Live posts |
| 4 | Partnership ads on the best posts, day-7 read | Which posts to boost | Ad tests running |
| 5 | Day-30 read, closing report | Whom to rebook | Report and next plan |
Step 1: fix one goal and one tracked action
A campaign with three goals gets judged on whichever number looks best. Choose one, and decide how you will see it.
| Goal | Tracked action | How you capture it |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Reel views, shares and saves per creator | Creator insight screenshots at day 7 and day 30 |
| Consideration | Saves, profile visits, branded search | Insights, plus Search Console before and after |
| Sales | Code redemptions | A unique code per creator, such as BRAND-HANDLE10 |
| App installs | Tracked link taps and installs | UTM links on the Story link sticker |
| Footfall | Codes used at the counter | A creator code staff can enter at billing |
Our guides to unique discount codes and UTM links show the setup.
Step 2: split the budget by format
Decide the split before you look at names, so a charismatic creator does not reshape the plan. These shares are our planning starting points, not benchmarks.
| Line | Share of creator budget | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | 60 to 70% | Discovery, and the post most worth amplifying |
| Story sets | 10 to 15% | Link sticker and code, the place the action happens |
| Carousels and static posts | 5 to 10% | Saved detail: ingredients, sizes, steps |
| Usage rights | 5 to 12% | Only for the posts you will boost |
| Reserve | About 5% | A replacement, a reshoot or a rebooking |
Use published asking prices from our rates guide: a Reel runs about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for micro creators and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for mid-tier, and a Story set about ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 for micro. Usage rights add about 35%. Several things sit outside the creator budget: GST at 18 percent, which published rate guides treat as extra; TDS, which the brand deducts when it pays (see TDS 194R and GST on influencer payments); the agency's management fee; and ad media. One published guide says media for boosted posts typically runs two to four times the creator fee, so size that line separately. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Step 3: cast on audience data
Ask every creator for five things before you talk price.
| Ask for | Healthy sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Audience top cities and age bands, last 30 days | Cities match your buyer map | Mostly overseas, or the wrong states |
| Views on the last 10 Reels | A steady band | One viral Reel, the rest tiny; price on the median |
| Saves and shares on those Reels | Present and rising with views | Likes far above views |
| Engagement rate against tier | Near 5 to 10% nano, 3 to 6% micro, 1.5 to 4% mid-tier | Far outside the range, high or low |
| Past sponsored posts | Close to the creator's organic performance | Brand posts far weaker, or a competitor last week |
Those ranges are indicative Indian benchmarks from published rate cards, so use them to compare a creator with their own tier. We shortlist creators at 70 or above on the 100-point Gully Score. For the method, see our influencer vetting checklist and how to read audience insights.
Step 4: put Instagram-specific terms in the contract
Beyond the usual clauses in our influencer contract guide, these are the lines Instagram campaigns need:
- Label. The Paid partnership label with the brand tagged, plus an on-screen "Ad" from the first frame. ASCI accepts a platform tool as a label and also sets placement and duration rules.
- Collab invite. If the post is a collab, the creator accepts the invite within 24 hours. See collab posts for brands.
- Ad permission. An ad code per post or account-level access, held for a stated number of days.
- Audio. Original audio or cleared music on any Reel you may boost. Meta's eligible-formats page says Reels with copyrighted music are not eligible as partnership ads unless the advertiser holds the rights.
- Live period. The post stays public for at least 30 days, and the caption is not edited after approval.
- Insights. Screenshots at 48 hours, day 7 and day 30.
- Rights and exclusivity. Platforms, window and competitor list. See usage rights.
- Revisions and replacement. Two rounds, and a clause for what happens if a creator goes silent.
Step 5: brief once, approve twice
Send a one-page brief: the product truth, the one claim that must land, claims to avoid, the code and link, the label and examples of good work. Then approve at two gates. The concept gate takes two to three days and checks the idea. The draft gate checks the finished video against this list:
| Check | A fail looks like |
|---|---|
| Label | At the end of the caption, or only in a hashtag pile |
| Claim | Says "cures" or "guaranteed" where your brand cannot prove it |
| First three seconds | Product not visible, no reason to stay |
| Audio | A trending track on a Reel you plan to boost |
| Link or code | Code spoken but not on screen, or the wrong code |
| Tags and mentions | Brand not tagged, or a competitor visible |
| Captions on screen | Video unreadable with the sound off |
| Brief fidelity | A different claim from the one you approved |
Step 6: post in waves
Do not release everything at once. A single burst makes the feed look like an ad wall and leaves you unable to tell which creator sold.
| Day | What goes live | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | First wave of Reels, about a third of creators | Early read on hooks |
| 1 | Story sets with link sticker and code, from the same creators | Action follows attention |
| 2 to 3 | Second wave of Reels; carousels | Fresh creators, adjusted briefs |
| 3 to 5 | Third wave, and any creator who fixed a draft | Keeps the feed moving |
Reply to purchase questions in the comments within two hours, and ask creators to pin the code. Meta's help page says the link sticker is available in organic Stories only, so keep the link out of the Reel caption and in the Story set. For Story sequences see link sticker campaigns.
Step 7: amplify with partnership ads
By day 5 to 7, rank posts by saves and shares per 1,000 reached. Pick the top three or four and check three things: your rights cover paid use, the creator has shared an ad code or account permission, and the format is eligible. Meta lists Reels of 15 minutes or less without copyrighted music and Stories of 60 seconds or less without an organic link sticker. Run each post as its own ad at equal spend and compare cost per click with your brand-made creatives. Write the stop rule first, for example pausing any ad that has spent twice your target cost per result without delivering one. Setup details are in our partnership ads guide, and the process is covered under creator ads and whitelisting.
Step 8: report at day 7 and day 30
| Metric | Day 7 | Day 30 |
|---|---|---|
| Reach and views per creator | Yes | Yes |
| Saves and shares per 1,000 views | Yes | Yes |
| Code redemptions and clicks | Early signal | Main number |
| Cost per result by creator | Draft | Final |
| Ad cost per click against brand creatives | First read | Final |
Rank every creator on cost per result and rebook those under target. Our campaign report template and ROI guide show the layout.
When something goes wrong
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| A creator goes silent after contract | Move to the reserve bench on day 3, and pay nothing until content is delivered |
| A post goes live without the label | Ask for the edit within 24 hours and hold payment until it is fixed |
| A code fails at checkout | Fix it the same day, extend the validity and tell the creator |
| A Reel flops | Do not boost it; read the hook and move on |
| Comments raise a product complaint | Reply publicly with a fix, and flag it to the creator |

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to run an Instagram influencer campaign?
Plan about five weeks from brief to closing report. A creator plan can reach you within 48 hours of the brief call. Contracts and product dispatch take the first week after approval, concepts and drafts the second, posting the third, partnership ads the fourth and the day-30 read the fifth. Celebrity names take longer because of negotiation and legal review. See how we work.
How many influencers do I need for an Instagram campaign?
Enough that one creator's bad or lucky week cannot decide the result. For a first campaign that usually means 10 to 25 nano and micro creators, split into cells that each test one thing. Fewer than eight gives you anecdotes, not data. Our guide on how many influencers you need gives the formula.
Should I pay for Reels, Stories or both?
Both, for different jobs. A Reel reaches people who do not follow the creator, and a Story set reaches followers and carries the link sticker and code. We usually book a Reel first and a Story set the next day from the same creator. Our Reels vs Stories guide compares them.
What should be in an Instagram influencer contract?
Deliverables and dates, the exact disclosure label and position, collab invite acceptance, two revision rounds, how long the post stays live, usage window and platforms, permission to run partnership ads, exclusivity, insight screenshots and payment terms. Our guide to influencer contracts in India explains each clause.
How do I know which Instagram posts to boost?
Wait five to seven days, then rank posts by saves and shares per 1,000 reached, not by likes. Boost only posts in an eligible format where you hold usage rights and ad permission. Test each at the same small spend and compare cost per click with your own creatives. See partnership ads setup.
How much should a brand budget for an Instagram influencer campaign?
It depends on tiers and formats: published asking prices run about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel and ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel. Add about 35% for usage rights, GST at 18%, ad media and agency fees. Put your mix into our influencer cost calculator or read the rates guide.
