In short
- Worth it depends on four tests: creators reach your buyer, your margin covers the cost, you can track orders or leads, and you can fulfil demand. Fix any failure first.
- Only 13.3% of surveyed brands tie influencer work to revenue targets, so many verdicts of 'it did not work' rest on no definition of working.
- Do the break-even sum before spending: all-in cost divided by profit per order gives the orders you need. Then ask whether your audience can plausibly deliver them.
- The cheapest proof is a capped pilot with a written pass mark and a stop rule.
Influencer marketing is worth it when four things are true: the creators you can afford reach your actual buyers, your margin leaves room for a test, you can trace orders or leads back to creators, and you can fulfil and answer the demand when it arrives. If one fails, fix it before you spend. If all four hold, a capped pilot is the cheapest way to learn whether it pays for your brand.

What the evidence says, and what it cannot say
On the consumer side, the signs are strong. In a 2025 Kantar-backed study covered by Campaign India, 69 percent of Indian consumers said they use influencers for product information, 63 percent for discovery and 60 percent to act, for example to buy.
On the money side, the channel is large but the estimates disagree. A 2026 vendor report puts the market at about ₹3,000 to 3,500 crore for 2025, growing around 22 percent a year, and an older EY report forecast ₹3,375 crore by 2026 (Social Samosa). In that EY report, 56 percent of brands spent more than 2 percent of their budget on influencers.
None of this proves it will pay for you. The same vendor survey found that only 13.3 percent of brands tie influencer work to formal revenue targets and 46.4 percent judge performance campaign by campaign (Campaign India). In the sources we reviewed, no audited Indian benchmark gives a reliable ROI, ROAS or cost per acquisition. The honest summary is that consumers say they act on creator content, and most brands cannot say whether their own spend paid.
Four tests of "worth it"
| Test | Worth it when | Not yet when | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer reach | You can name creators and formats your buyer already watches, and audience city and language match | Your buyer is described only as "18 to 35", or does not watch social video | Write the buyer down; read how to read influencer audience insights |
| Margin | Profit per order covers the all-in cost at a believable conversion rate | Thin margin with high shipping and returns | Test nano and micro creators first; price for the margin |
| Tracking | A code and link per creator, a survey question and a pass mark exist before launch | The plan is "we will see how it goes" | Use UTM links and discount codes |
| Operations | Stock is ready, support replies fast and drafts get approved within two days | Stockouts, slow replies, a long approval chain | Fix the chain before the first post |
The job decides whether it is worth it
The answer changes with the job you hire creators to do. A creator who is a poor way to close sales can still be a good way to find your first thousand buyers, or to make ads.
| Job | It is worth it when | Judge it by |
|---|---|---|
| Launch awareness | You need many credible first impressions in a short window | Cost per 1,000 views against your paid video cost, saves, branded search |
| Consideration | Buyers research before buying and listen to peers | Saves, shares, branded search, assisted orders |
| Direct sales | The product is a low-consideration buy, the margin is healthy and codes or links are possible | Cost per order against your break-even |
| Content for ads | Creator content beats your studio creative in a test | Cost per usable asset, then click and conversion results of creator ads against brand ads |
The third row is the hardest to pass and the most tempting to assume. Treat sales as the job only if the break-even sum below says the maths can work.
The break-even sum
Do this before you spend a rupee. It takes ten minutes and tells you whether the plan is plausible.
The last line is the test. If your paid ads already bring a visit for less than that, creators must earn the difference some other way: higher conversion because the buyer trusts the person, content you can reuse as creator ads, or repeat buyers. The sum counts the first order only. If customers reorder, lifetime profit lowers the break-even, but only use repeat rates from your own data. See influencer marketing LTV and CAC.
When it is not worth it yet
- A thin monthly spread. One agency's published benchmark says that below about ₹2 lakh a month, discovery and management overhead eats most of a continuing programme. Run one capped test instead.
- A category with tight claims rules. ASCI processed 1,609 influencer ads in 2025-26 and found 97.3 percent needed modification. Regulated categories are not off limits, but the cost of getting it right goes up. See regulated industries and influencer marketing.
- Stock or support not ready. A post that sends buyers to an empty listing wastes the fee.
- A single-post plan. One post rarely teaches you anything. A test needs enough creators to compare.
- A result by a date you cannot move. Creators cannot guarantee orders by Friday. That is a job for paid media. See how long influencer marketing takes to work.
- No intention to act on the answer. If you would keep spending, or cancel, whatever the numbers say, do not pay for the numbers.
Worth it compared with what
Every rupee has another use, so the real question is whether creators beat the next best channel for your goal. Paid media buys a predictable number of visits at a price you can read off a dashboard. Creators buy trust and creative at a less predictable cost. The two are not rivals. In a Q1 2026 vendor survey, 76.6 percent of brands had run partnership ads with influencers, and 23.3 percent did so regularly. That is the creator-ads route, where a creator's post is tested organically and the winner runs as a paid ad from your account. Our creator ads and whitelisting service runs it, and the creator ads budget split shows how to divide spend between fees and media.
The cheapest way to find out
A pilot turns "is it worth it" into a question with an answer. Our starting point, from our guide to running an influencer pilot, is 10 to 15 micro and nano creators, four to six weeks and ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh of creator spend, testing two variables at most. It is a starting point, not a rule, and your category may need more or less.
Write the pass mark before launch, using the break-even sum: the cost per order you can afford. Then decide in advance what each result means.
| Result after a fair read window | What to do |
|---|---|
| Beats the pass mark with clean tracking | Scale with the winning creators and hooks; add creator ads |
| Close to the pass mark | Change one variable, such as hook or tier, and run a small second wave |
| Far below, with clean tracking | Stop and spend elsewhere; keep the learning |
| Far below, but tracking was broken | Do not conclude. Fix tracking and rerun smaller |
Even a failed pilot leaves you with data on which creators post on time, which hooks held attention, and, if you bought rights, content you can test in ads. That is why the downside is capped at the budget you set.
What to do next
- Run the four tests above and write down which one is weakest.
- Do the break-even sum with your own price, margin and conversion rate.
- Take the numbers to whoever approves the budget. Our post on pitching influencer marketing internally shows how to frame it as a capped test.
- If it is your first campaign, read influencer marketing for beginners. If you have heard conflicting advice, influencer marketing myths sorts fact from folklore.
For a plan built around your numbers, our influencer marketing strategy service covers audits, pilots and measurement. Typical rates by tier are in our influencer marketing cost guide. To see what the test could cost, use the influencer cost calculator, or send a brief through the contact page and we will return a creator plan with a cost estimate within 48 hours of the brief call.

Frequently asked questions
Is influencer marketing worth it for a small business?
It can be, if you start small and track it. A pilot with a handful of nano and micro creators costs far less than a celebrity deal, and published asking prices for nano Reels run about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000. Do the break-even sum first. See influencer marketing for small business in India.
What is the ROI of influencer marketing in India?
There is no audited Indian benchmark. In the sources we reviewed, none gives a reliable ROI, ROAS or cost per acquisition for creator campaigns. Published single-campaign claims come from brands and agencies. Set your own target from your margin, as in what is a good ROI for influencer marketing.
Is influencer marketing better than paid ads?
They do different jobs. Paid ads buy precise reach at a predictable cost per result. Creators lend trust and creative you could not write yourself, and their best posts can then run as ads. Compare all-in cost per result, not channel loyalty. See influencer marketing vs paid ads.
Why do some brands say influencer marketing did not work?
Common causes are no single goal, creators chosen by follower count, no tracking, one post instead of a series and a verdict reached too early. In a Q1 2026 vendor survey only 13.3 percent of brands tied influencer work to revenue targets. Read influencer marketing mistakes for the full list.
How much should I spend to test whether influencer marketing is worth it?
Our starting point is ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh of creator spend across 10 to 15 micro and nano creators over four to six weeks, with a pass mark written first. That is a starting point, not a rule. Use the influencer cost calculator to adjust for your tier and formats.
When should I stop spending on influencer marketing?
Stop when tracking is clean, you gave it a fair read window and cost per result stays far above your pass mark across two waves. Do not stop on a day-two read or on broken tracking. Fix the variable you can name, run one more small wave, then decide. See how to run an influencer pilot.
