In short
- India observes Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August: 2 August 2026 and 1 August 2027. The UN's day is 30 July, a Friday in 2027.
- There is no ritual to respect, so the idea is the whole campaign. Use real friend pairs, give them a place to go and track a 'bring a friend' code.
- Do not ask creators to tag friends who have not agreed, build alcohol hooks for an audience that includes teenagers, or treat loneliness lightly.
- A café chain plan in three cities costs about ₹11.2 to 12.0 lakh before GST in our example. Brief on Monday 7 June 2027.
Friendship Day influencer campaigns work when the brand gives friends a reason to be in the same place. There is no ritual to honour and no shopping list to serve, which means the idea is the whole campaign. This post is the Friendship Day slice of our guide to influencer marketing in India, with eleven ideas, 2026 and 2027 dates, a plan, budgets and the rules on tagging, alcohol and teenagers.
It is the lightest moment on the festival marketing calendar for influencers, which is why it suits cafés, trips, gifts, apps and student brands better than heavy categories.
Friendship Day dates for 2026 and 2027
Two dates compete, and brands should know both.
| 2026 | 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Friendship Day in India (first Sunday of August) | Sunday 2 August | Sunday 1 August |
| UN International Day of Friendship | Thursday 30 July | Friday 30 July |
Drik Panchang's 2027 calendar and its 2026 calendar list the Indian dates as the first Sunday of August. The United Nations lists the International Day of Friendship on 30 July, proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2011. Some audiences and brands post on one, some on the other.
In 2027 the two dates give a natural three-day run: Friday 30 July, Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August. The weeks around it hold the mid-year sales (see sale season influencer marketing), the first weeks of college (see back-to-college campaigns), then Independence Day on Sunday 15 August and Raksha Bandhan on Tuesday 17 August; see Raksha Bandhan campaign ideas. Monsoon rain affects outdoor plans; see monsoon influencer marketing.
What audiences do online
In our experience the audience is young and the behaviour is simple. People post photographs of the group, "then and now" collages and long captions to old friends. They tag each other, change profile pictures and swap friendship bands, and many make a plan: a café, a movie, a trip, a gift.
Snapchat is part of this. Snap says it passed 250 million monthly active users in India and that about 90 percent of its daily users in the country are aged 13 to 34, according to its newsroom, which is the Friendship Day audience. See our Snapchat influencer marketing guide for how brands use it.
Unlike a festival, Friendship Day has no peak hour. The useful posts come in the week before, as plans and offers, and the day itself is the audience's own.
Eleven Friendship Day campaign ideas
Pairs and places
- The friend pair. Two creators who are real friends co-star in one Reel posted as a Collab, so it appears on both accounts; see Instagram Collab posts. Suits cafés, apps and beauty.
- Bring a friend. A café or outlet offers a second item when a friend arrives, tracked with a creator code at the counter. See restaurants and QSR and campaign ideas for restaurants.
- The weekend trip for four. Travel and lifestyle creators plan a trip with friends at a stated budget per person. Suits stays, cabs, bikes and travel and hospitality.
- Cook together. Friends cook a dish in one kitchen; suits snacks, sauces and small appliances. See FMCG, food and beverage.
Stories and gifts
- The oldest friend. A long-form film or podcast clip about a ten-year friendship. Brand-light and shared widely.
- Band and box. Craft creators make friendship bands and a personalised gift box. See gifting and seeding.
- Long-distance friends. Friends in two cities hold a video-call reunion with a couriered hamper. Suits telecom, courier and apps.
Squads and campus
- First-week friends. First-year students tell how they made their first friend at college. Adult creators only; see back-to-college campaigns.
- Gaming squads. Duo and squad streamers play together on a Friendship Day stream. See gaming and esports.
- Four-legged friends. Pet creators and their owners mark the day. See influencer marketing for pet brands.
- Check in on a friend. A creator and a qualified counsellor show how to ask a friend how they are, with a recognised helpline linked. No treatment claims.
Ideas 2 and 7 are the two brands underbuy. A tracked offer turns the day into a measurable footfall event, and long-distance friends are a large, emotional audience in a country of migrating students and workers.
Rules on tagging, alcohol and teenagers
Friendship Day content brushes against three risks.
- Tagging. A tag in a sponsored post is part of the ad. Ask creators to tag only friends who have agreed, and never to mass-tag. If a tagged friend receives a product or fee, that friend must disclose too. Giveaways that ask for tags have their own rules; see Instagram giveaways in India.
- Alcohol. "Friends and drinks" is an easy hook and a risky one. Many followers are under the legal drinking age, and promoting alcohol under another name can be surrogate advertising. See surrogate advertising and influencers.
- Teenagers. Many followers and some creators are under 18. Use adult creators, involve a parent if a minor must feature, and do not aim creator ads at children, since the DPDP Act and Rules bar tracking and targeted advertising directed at children, per PIB. See children in influencer ads.

Casting and briefing
- Check the friendship. Look for earlier posts together. A pair that met for the brief reads as an ad.
- Brief the pair, not two creators. Agree who posts first, who is tagged and which account carries the code.
- Split by city. A café chain with outlets in three cities needs creators in each, since a code is only useful where an outlet is.
- Cast for college too. Student creators need a one-page label guide; see brief examples by category.
- Keep the offer plain. One offer, one code, one line at the counter.
What to measure
Count code redemptions at the counter by creator and outlet, the share of redemptions that came with a second person, saves on the trip and gift posts, and Stories link taps. Compare outlet footfall across the weekend with the same weekend a month earlier. Read comments on the long-distance and oldest-friend posts, since they show how the story landed. Our guide to influencer attribution for offline sales explains how to set a baseline.
Budget notes
Use the ranges in our influencer rates guide: a nano Reel about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000, a micro Reel ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, a micro Story set ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, a nano Story set ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 and a mid-tier Reel ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh. A friend pair is two creators on one post, so ask whether the fee covers one account or two.
Add about 35 percent for usage rights in our plans, and expect creator-ad rights to add 60 to 120 percent over organic in one published guide. A meal or voucher given to a creator is a gift, so it needs a label and counts towards the ₹20,000 yearly threshold for 10 percent TDS under section 194R, though a single meal rarely gets near it. Management fees run about 15 to 25 percent of creator spend in published benchmarks. Try the mix in our cost calculator.
Sensitivities and things to avoid
- Friendship is not a purchase. Do not imply that a gift measures a friendship.
- Not everyone has a group. Loneliness is real. Do not mock people without a squad, or frame the day as a test.
- No "friend zone" jokes. Mockery of gender, orientation or looks is a stereotype; see our Women's Day post for the ASCI guidance.
- No alcohol hooks. Keep drinks out of briefs.
- Consent for every face. Do not use a friend's image in an ad without agreement.
- Mental health needs care. Use a qualified voice, link a recognised helpline and make no treatment claims.
- Mind the date. Do not wish a happy Friendship Day on the wrong one: the first Sunday of August and 30 July are both in use.
Disclosure, labels and tax
Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, money, free products, gifts and barter are a material connection, and the label must be upfront and prominent. A Story needs it on the visual, a Reel of 15 seconds or less needs it on screen for at least 3 seconds, and on a Collab post both friends label their share. The brand shares responsibility for claims, including offer terms.
Kept gifts count towards the ₹20,000 yearly threshold for 10 percent TDS under section 194R, with exemptions for some small individual creators; see TDS 194R and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions
When is Friendship Day in 2026 and 2027?
India observes it on the first Sunday of August, which Drik Panchang lists as Sunday 2 August 2026 and Sunday 1 August 2027. The UN's International Day of Friendship, proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2011, is 30 July. In 2027 that is a Friday, so you can run a three-day weekend from 30 July to 1 August.
Which creators work best for Friendship Day campaigns?
Real friend pairs and small groups: food and lifestyle creators, travel duos, students and gaming squads, mostly micro and nano. Check that the friendship is visible in their own content, since audiences notice a staged pair. Our Instagram influencer marketing service runs Collab posts and paired Reels.
How early should we plan a Friendship Day influencer campaign?
Eight weeks. For 1 August 2027, brief on Monday 7 June, book creators by 14 June, build the offer and codes by 28 June, approve drafts by 19 July and go live from 26 July. Mid-year sales and the freshers' season overlap the same weeks, so student creators book early.
Can we ask creators to tag their friends in sponsored posts?
Only friends who have agreed. A tag in a sponsored post is part of the ad, and some friends will not want to be in one. Ask creators to get consent, label the post, and avoid mass-tagging mechanics. If a tagged friend also gets a product or a fee, that friend needs a disclosure too. See Instagram giveaways in India.
How much does a Friendship Day influencer campaign cost?
Published rates are about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-tier Reel. A friend pair is two creators, so ask whether one fee covers both accounts. Add rights, ads and a management fee of 15 to 25 percent. See influencer rates.
Can a bar or pub run a Friendship Day influencer campaign?
Be careful. Alcohol advertising is restricted, and many creators and followers are under 18 or under the legal drinking age. If a brand promotes a drink under another name, it may be surrogate advertising. Take legal advice first, and see our post on surrogate advertising and influencers.
