Influencer marketing in West Bengal: a brand's playbook for Bengali, the districts and the Puja year

Influencer marketing in West Bengal means Bengali-first creators, district markets that do not sound like Kolkata, and a year built around Durga Puja. This playbook covers languages, calendar, costs and a worked plan.

In short

  • Cast Bengali-first creators and check script and spelling: Bengali gained classical language status in October 2024, and a misspelt offer line in a paid post is a visible mistake.
  • West Bengal is not only Bengali: Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Santali and others are official where speakers cluster, so North Bengal and the industrial belt need their own plans.
  • Durga Puja 2027 falls about 5 to 10 October, and Kolkata's Puja is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list; plan districts as well as the city.
  • A 10-week Puja test across Kolkata and four district markets costs about ₹9.5 lakh in creator fees, before management fee, GST and creator ads.

In West Bengal, influencer marketing starts with Bengali-first creators, extends to districts that do not sound like Kolkata, and peaks in the Puja season. Start with one language, one clear moment and a small budget, then widen only where cost per result holds. For the basics read our guide to influencer marketing in India; for casting by language see our regional influencer marketing service.

Our Kolkata page covers the city, its Puja checklist and its shoot locations. This post covers the state around it. Related plans sit in our playbooks for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Language: Bengali, its registers, and the others

Britannica notes that Bengali has two standard styles, Sadhubhasa (elegant) and Chaltibhasa (colloquial), and that since the early twentieth century Chaltibhasa has become the dominant literary and educated form; it also describes four main dialect groups that roughly follow older political divisions (Britannica). For a creator video, the rule is simple: use the spoken register, not the formal one.

Bengali also carries recent official recognition. The Union Cabinet approved classical language status for Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Pali and Prakrit on 3 October 2024 (PMO). We do not draw a sales conclusion from that, but it is a reminder to treat script and spelling with care: a misspelt Bengali offer line in a paid post is a visible mistake.

West Bengal is also plurilingual in law. The state's Official Language Act already lists Urdu, Hindi, Nepali, Santali, Odia and Punjabi alongside Bengali, and 2018 amendments added Kurukh and made Kamtapuri, Rajbanshi and Kurmali official in districts, sub-divisions, blocks or municipalities where their speakers exceed 10 percent (Millennium Post). The practical meaning for a brand: North Bengal and the western and industrial districts do not simply speak "Bengal Bengali".

Four markets, not one

The grouping below is our working casting map, not an official division.

MarketCore townsLanguages to checkCasting note
Kolkata and HowrahKolkata, Howrah, Salt LakeBengali, English, Hindi, UrduSee Kolkata; metro pricing
South and central districtsBarddhaman, Hooghly, Nadia, MedinipurBengali in regional accentsStrong Puja and district-fair content; book local creators
Industrial beltDurgapur, AsansolBengali, HindiCheck the audience mix; cast Bengali and Hindi cohorts separately if both show up
North BengalSiliguri, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, DarjeelingBengali, Nepali, Rajbanshi and Kamtapuri speakers, HindiDifferent towns, languages and festivals; test as its own cohort

Britannica's four dialect groups include the northern parts of West Bengal, which supports splitting the plan. A vendor survey reported by Campaign India puts tier 2 engagement at 3.5% to 4.5% against 3% to 4% in metros, which is a reason to test the district markets, not a result. Our guide to tier 2 and tier 3 cities explains how to compare them.

Pride and the brand voice

UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021 (UNESCO). We read that as a signal about stakes. Bengal's cultural pride is not a hook to borrow; it is something audiences will notice if a brand gets wrong. Three working rules:

  • Do not use Bengali culture as costume. A non-Bengali creator in a borrowed saree and an accent is a tonal risk.
  • Use Bengali creators for Bengali moments. Poila Boishakh, Puja, book fairs and film culture belong to people who live them.
  • Let the creator write the line. A translated tagline reads as an ad. A creator's own phrase reads as a person.

The calendar, November 2026 to November 2027

Dates move with Bengal's own calendar, so confirm with local creators. Drik Panchang and the other sources named below supply the 2027 dates.

The Gangasagar Mela draws lakhs of pilgrims around Makar Sankranti each year and the state organises it (The Week). IMD's report on cyclone Dana, which hit the Odisha and West Bengal coast in 2024, shows how its warnings escalate (IMD). Our festival calendar has the national view.

Plan the Puja year, not the Puja week

Kolkata's page sets out the six-week Puja campaign for the city. At state level the question is how to spread the same moment across markets and months. The sequence below is our planning view, not a published norm.

Window (2027)StepWhy it sits there
June to mid-JulyData pull by district; decide which markets get a cohortOrders by PIN code show where Puja demand already reaches you
Mid-JulyBrief creators; book Kolkata names firstCreator calendars fill early before the Puja season
AugustContracts, scripts in Bengali, native review, product seedingSeeded products need time to reach district towns
SeptemberDrafts approved; teaser postsThe offer must be live before shoppers plan outfits and gifts
About 5 to 10 OctoberPuja posts and creator ads by district clusterPeak attention; keep a daily comment-reader on shift
29 to 31 OctoberKali Puja, Diwali and Bhai Phonta follow-upGifting content from the same creators, under the same code scheme

Two district-level notes. If you want a brand presence at a community Puja, deal with the Puja committee, not only the creator, and agree what signage is allowed. And agree the district split in the contract: a creator who also covers Kolkata should say which market a particular post is meant for, so your codes read cleanly. Our Navratri and Durga Puja playbook covers idea lists and cultural do-and-don't rules, and our guide to hiring influencers for festive sales covers the offer mechanics.

Platforms and formats

Platform use is not published by state in a form we would quote, so we test rather than assume: YouTube for long Bengali food, travel and culture videos, Instagram Reels for youth, comedy and fashion, Facebook for older district audiences, and creator ads aimed at one district cluster at a time. Our Instagram campaign playbook covers the Reels workflow. The creator types we cast most often are Bengali home cooks and food trail makers, saree and festive fashion creators, comedy and music creators, culture and book creators, and district-town vloggers.

Writing for Bengali viewers

Our regional campaign guide covers the review steps. Bengali raises three points of its own.

Register is tone. Britannica's two styles, Sadhubhasa and Chaltibhasa, are a useful reminder that written and spoken Bengali can sit far apart. Brief for colloquial speech, and keep a slightly more formal tone for elder-facing content only. Bengali also offers more than one level of address to the viewer, so ask your Bengali reviewer which one the script uses and whether it matches the brand's voice.

Script is a visible detail. Render the brand name in Bengali script, check the spelling and the conjuncts, and have a native reader confirm. A misspelt offer line in a paid post sits on screen where everyone can read it.

The on-screen layer should be Bengali. Offers, codes and the disclosure label can be in Bengali; ASCI allows English or the language of the ad, provided the label is upfront and prominent (ASCI). Pay on a native reviewer's sign-off of the final video.

What a West Bengal campaign costs

Fees start from the national asking prices in our rates guide.

DeliverableTypical range per creator
Nano Reel₹2,000 to ₹10,000
Micro Reel₹8,000 to ₹80,000
Mid-tier Reel₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh
Micro YouTube dedicated video₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh

Puja season has a cost that other seasons do not: rival brands. If you want your appliance offer to be the only one a creator shows for a month, you pay for exclusivity. In our planning it adds about 40 percent for 30 days, so a ₹25,000 micro Reel becomes ₹35,000. One published guide quotes 30 to 50 percent for 30 days and 80 to 150 percent for 90 days, which would put the same Reel at ₹45,000 to ₹62,500 for a 90-day lock. That guide is a single low-confidence source, so decide whether you need exclusivity at all, and for how long, before you ask.

Usage rights add about 35 percent in our planning, and published benchmarks suggest management fees of 15 to 25 percent of creator spend. The cost calculator builds the sum, and our guide to the exclusivity clause shows how to write it.

Where West Bengal plans go wrong

Brands plan for Kolkata and call it Bengal, so North Bengal and the industrial belt never get their own creators. They script in the formal register, and Sadhubhasa reads like a notice, not a person. They brief Puja too late, after the best creators' calendars have filled. They skip a Bengali reviewer, so a wrong word in a paid post becomes theirs. And they borrow the culture instead of casting people who live it.

To see which Bengali creators we would shortlist for your product, and which markets to test first, send us a brief. Our team replies within two working hours, and the creator plan arrives within 48 hours of the brief call.

Frequently asked questions

Do brands need Bengali creators for West Bengal campaigns?

For most categories, yes. Bengali audiences read language closely, and English-first creators suit premium tech, finance and careers. Run a small Bengali versus English test and compare cost per result. Our Kolkata page covers the city, and the regional influencer service covers casting.

Which languages besides Bengali matter in West Bengal?

Hindi and Urdu in the industrial belt and parts of the south, and Nepali, Santali, Kamtapuri, Rajbanshi, Kurmali and Kurukh in the north and west, where state law allows them for official use in areas with enough speakers. Check each creator's audience before you choose a language layer.

When should a brand brief creators for Durga Puja 2027?

Durga Puja falls about 5 to 10 October 2027, and Bengal's own panchang decides the final days. Brief creators ten to twelve weeks ahead, which means mid-July, and book by late June. Our guide to Navratri and Durga Puja campaigns has the Puja timeline.

Can a brand reach North Bengal with Kolkata creators?

Not reliably. North Bengal has its own languages, towns and festivals, and a Kolkata creator may carry an audience that lives elsewhere. Cast creators from Siliguri and the nearby districts for local trust, and test them as a separate cohort.

How much does influencer marketing cost in West Bengal?

Creator fees follow national asking prices: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-tier Reel. Add rights, ads, GST and a management fee. See the influencer rates guide.

Should the ASCI label be in Bengali?

It can be. ASCI allows the disclosure label in English or in the language of the ad, as long as it is upfront, prominent and easy to understand. A Bengali label on a Bengali video is usually the easiest for viewers to notice. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
