In short
- A takeover borrows a creator's voice on your account, or your team's on theirs. It builds familiarity and replies, and works best when it is short, planned and approved.
- Never share your password. Give limited access or send content through your team, keep creators out of your inbox, and name one person who can end it.
- No published rate card prices takeovers, so we price them as Story sets. Our example weekend, three regional creators plus a founder swap, costs about ₹3.4 to ₹3.6 lakh.
- Creators who announce a takeover on their own account need a clear ASCI label, and your own staff can use the Employee label.
An influencer takeover puts a creator in charge of your brand's account for a day, or puts your founder or team in charge of the creator's. Followers get a different voice, the creator's audience gets a look at your brand, and both sides get a reason to reply. This post gives thirteen takeover ideas, each with creator type, platform, what it achieves and a budget, and the controls to set up first. It sits inside our guide to influencer marketing in India and the Instagram influencer marketing service, because most takeovers happen in Stories.
No published rate card prices takeovers, so we price them from the Story-set and Reel bands in our influencer rates guide: about three Story sets for a one-day takeover. That is a planning assumption, not a quoted market rate. For micro creators the Story-set band is ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, and for mid-tier creators ₹20,000 to ₹80,000. GST at 18 percent, usage rights (about 35 percent in our planning) and management fees come on top.

What goes in a takeover brief
Takeovers are short, so the brief carries most of the weight. It should list the tone and three things the account never says, the three moments to show (a demonstration, the offer, a question hour), topics that are off limits (competitors, price promises outside the offer, health or performance claims you cannot back), the code and link, the rules for replies and who to escalate to, the disclosure line and where it appears, and the stop word with two named contacts. Send it with a sample frame list so the creator sees the shape of the day, and ask for a written concept for each section before day one. Our campaign brief template has the fields to adapt.
Lock these down before anyone logs in
A takeover fails on logistics, not creativity. Settle each row below in writing, and brief your community manager as well as the creator.
| Risk | Control |
|---|---|
| Account access | No password sharing. Use the platform's permission tools where they exist, or let the creator send frames to your team to post. Turn on two-step verification and remove access when the window closes. |
| Off-brand or unsafe content | Approve the first three frames and the closing offer in advance; agree a stop word that ends the takeover at once. |
| Customer data | Keep creators out of direct messages and order screens. The DPDP Rules 2025 start the main data-fiduciary duties after about 18 months (around May 2027), but handling customers' details carelessly is a risk now. |
| Comments and replies | Agree who replies to complaints; one person on your side watches the account all day. |
| Saved content | Stories expire after 24 hours unless you save them to Highlights. Saving, reposting or running them as ads is further use, so agree it in the contract; see usage rights. |
| Competing deals | Ask the creator to confirm no clashing brand deal in the window, and state it as an exclusivity term if needed. |
Run it on a clock. A good one-day Story takeover has an opening frame that says who is running the account, a reply or poll frame by mid-morning, the main demonstration around lunch, a question box in the afternoon and a closing frame with a link and code. Fifteen to twenty frames is plenty.
Disclosure on both sides
When a creator announces the takeover on their own account, that post is an ad. ASCI's influencer guidelines require a clear label (Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration or Partnership) wherever there is a material connection; on Stories or any visual without a caption, the label goes on the visual itself, upfront. Employees posting for the brand may use the Employee label, which ASCI lists among permitted labels. Responsibility is shared, so you should check the announcement before it goes out.
LinkedIn is a particular risk: ASCI's 2024-25 complaints press release reports 121 LinkedIn disclosure violations by professionals who did not disclose paid partnerships and a targeted advisory for the platform, so a guest-post week needs a label as much as an Instagram one. See how to run a LinkedIn creator campaign. This is general information, not legal advice.
What public record shows (not our work)
We found no published takeover campaign with results in our sources. The nearest documented example is KFC India's "Saucy Popcorn" in 2025, a creator-led post on the brand's own Instagram account, which exchange4media reported drew 36.7K comments, the only metric published. That is a creator on a brand account, not a confirmed takeover, and comments alone say little about sales. The point for you: plan the replies you will receive before the takeover starts.
Next steps
A takeover works well as the opening of something longer. Pair it with a live session, a behind-the-scenes series or a challenge to give followers a reason to return. For link and code mechanics see Instagram Story link sticker campaigns. To get a takeover plan with creators, an access checklist and costs within 48 hours, send us your brief.

Frequently asked questions
What is an influencer takeover?
A takeover is when a creator posts from your brand's account for a set period, usually a day of Instagram Stories, so their voice and audience meet your followers. A reverse takeover puts your founder or team on the creator's account. It is a short, high-contact format, not a replacement for a content programme. See our Instagram influencer marketing service.
How much does an influencer takeover cost?
There is no published rate card for takeovers. We price a one-day Story takeover as about three Story sets: ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for a micro creator and ₹60,000 to ₹2.4 lakh for a mid-tier one, using published Story-set bands. Add rights if you save or reuse the content, plus GST at 18 percent. Check the influencer rates guide.
Is it safe to give an influencer access to our brand account?
It is safe if you never share the password, use the platform's permission tools or a handover through your team, and keep creators away from your direct messages, where customer details sit. Name one admin who can stop the takeover, require two-step verification on the account and pre-approve the first Stories. Our note on crisis management covers what to do if something goes wrong.
Does an influencer takeover need an ASCI disclosure?
The creator's own announcement on their account must carry a clear label such as Ad, Collaboration or Partnership, as ASCI requires when there is a material connection. On Stories the label goes on the visual itself. On your brand account the content is your advertising already. Staff takeovers can use the Employee label. See disclosure hashtags.
How long should a takeover last?
For Instagram Stories, one day is usually enough: about 10 to 20 frames across morning, afternoon and evening. A week of daily takeovers by different creators works as a relay, but fatigue and moderation workload rise. Longer takeovers belong in a creator ambassador programme rather than a one-off.
Can a takeover drive sales or only awareness?
It can drive both if you plan for it: a link sticker or code in the closing frames, a clear offer, and a tracked link. Without that it measures awareness, replies and follower growth. Use unique codes per creator, as in tracking sales with discount codes.
