Unboxing campaign ideas for brands: thirteen ways to get creators to open your product on camera

In short

  • Decide whether you are seeding, paying or doing both. Gifted boxes carry no promise of a post, while a paid unboxing is a contract with a label and a date.
  • An unboxing shows a first impression. Performance claims belong in a later review, because endorsers should not praise what they have not used.
  • Gifted product still needs an ASCI label, and a product the creator keeps is a benefit for TDS under section 194R, once totals pass ₹20,000 in a year.
  • Launch unboxings need volume. One agency-reported tech launch averaged about 60,000 views across 250 micro creators, so plan many boxes, not one star.

An unboxing campaign sends your product to creators and asks them to open it on camera, so viewers watch the first reaction, the packaging and the contents before they decide. It is the cheapest way to get a product into feeds, and the easiest to do badly. This post gives thirteen unboxing ideas for brands, each with creator type, platform, what it achieves and a budget, built on the gifting and seeding service and our guide to influencer marketing in India.

Budgets use published asking prices from our influencer rates guide. For micro creators I quote the lower half of the Reel band, ₹8,000 to ₹40,000. Box costs are yours to add: product, packing and courier. GST at 18 percent, usage rights (about 35 percent in our planning) and management fees (published benchmarks suggest 15 to 25 percent of creator spend) are extra.

Decide first: seed, pay or both

RouteWhat you promiseWhat you getWatch for
Gifted box, no obligationA productPosts from some recipients, on their own termsLow post rate; still needs a label if they post
Paid unboxingA fee, a date, a deliverableA contracted Reel or videoRights, revisions and the label are in the contract
Gifted box with a promise to postA product in return for a postBarterTreated as a paid connection; see barter collaborations

The seeding maths is simple. If a box costs you an assumed ₹600 landed and one in five recipients posts, each post costs ₹3,000, against ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a paid nano Reel. If only one in fifteen posts, it costs ₹9,000, and a paid nano Reel wins. Measure your own post rate in the first wave before you scale it.

Design the box to be filmed

Creators film boxes that are easy to open on camera and rewarding to look at. Viewers decide quickly whether to keep watching, so give the creator a reason to keep the camera rolling: a sealed layer, a card that says what is inside, one item that is a surprise.

  • Make the first reveal clean. One tear strip or lid, no tape maze. Hard-to-open packs produce cut videos.
  • Add a note, not a script. A handwritten card that thanks them is fine. A card that tells them what to say is a scripted claim, and it undermines the honest-reaction value.
  • Print the ask for a label. A small insert that says "if you post, please add a Free gift or Collaboration label" does the compliance work gently.
  • Put a tracked link on the card. A short link or code lets you attribute orders without asking creators to read a URL aloud.
  • Check for damage. Ship one spare for every ten boxes, and photograph each box before it leaves.

Give recipients five to seven days after delivery to post, and tell them the date you will check. Send the courier tracking to your own team, not just to the creator.

Free product: labels, tax and claims

Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, free or discounted products, even unsolicited ones, are a material connection. The post needs a clear label (Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership or Free gift) that is upfront. On a video of 15 seconds or less, the label must be on screen for at least 3 seconds; on a video of more than 15 seconds but under two minutes, for one third of the video. A creator who bought the product and received nothing from you needs no label.

An unboxing is a first impression, not a verdict. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows say endorsers should not endorse what they have not personally used or checked. Ask creators to describe what they see and feel, and to hold performance claims for a later review. See honest review campaigns.

On tax, a summary of CBDT's circular says a product sent for a shoot and returned afterwards attracts no TDS, while one the creator keeps is a benefit under section 194R: 10 percent TDS, valued at your purchase price (or selling price if you make the item), once the total to that person passes ₹20,000 in a financial year. The Income-tax Act 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, and tax blogs map the rule to section 393, so confirm the mapping with your CA. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Two launches on public record (not our work)

Two Indian tech launches show how much volume an unboxing-style launch needs. For the POCO F7 5G launch in 2025, MediaNews4u reported that Idiotic Media used 250 tech micro creators on Instagram and YouTube, plus a launch film with a film star, for 15.15 million Instagram Reels views and a day-one sell-out. That is about 60,000 views per creator (our arithmetic). A TECNO POVA Curve 2 case page on an agency's own site lists 440 micro and mid-tier tech creators and about 20.7 million views across Reels, Shorts and 440 Stories, or about 47,000 per creator (our arithmetic; undated, low confidence).

Both are agency-reported, and neither source says how much of the content was unboxing, so read them as evidence about volume, not the format. The lesson is that micro creators deliver tens of thousands of views each, so a launch needs many boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What is an unboxing influencer campaign?

It is a campaign where creators open your product, or a sealed box of it, on camera and share their first reaction. Brands use it for launches, gifting seasons and ad creative. It is cheaper than a full review because the creator needs no testing time, but it also proves less. Our page on gifting and seeding explains how the boxes are sent and tracked.

How much does an unboxing campaign cost?

A paid nano unboxing costs ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 a Reel and a micro unboxing ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 in the lower half of the published band, plus the landed cost of each box. A mid-tier YouTube unboxing starts around ₹1 lakh. Add GST at 18 percent. See the influencer rates guide for every tier.

Should we send free boxes or pay for unboxings?

Do both in order. Send free boxes to many nano creators to see who posts unprompted, then pay the ones whose content you liked for a contracted Reel. Seeding costs only the box, but no one is obliged to post, so budget for a low post rate. Our guide to what influencer seeding is shows the arithmetic.

Does a gifted unboxing need an ASCI disclosure?

Yes. ASCI treats free products, even unsolicited ones, as a material connection, so the post needs a clear label such as Ad, Collaboration or Free gift, placed upfront. The brand shares responsibility for making sure the post conforms. If the creator bought the product and you gave nothing, no label is needed. See influencer disclosure hashtags.

Is there tax on products we send to influencers?

A product sent for a shoot and returned afterwards attracts no TDS, according to a summary of CBDT's circular. If the creator keeps it, section 194R applies: 10 percent TDS on its value once the total benefits to that person pass ₹20,000 in a financial year. From 1 April 2026 the rule sits in the Income-tax Act 2025, so confirm with your CA. See TDS 194R and GST.

Can we use creators' unboxing videos in our ads?

Only with a written licence that names the platforms, the length of use and whether you may run them as partnership ads. Usage rights are usually priced as a separate line; our planning figure is about 35 percent of the fee. Raw unboxings made for your ad account, never posted by the creator, are a cleaner route.
